As Okita pointed out, I think it is true that Hijikata felt complicated feelings for Kano.
It seems that he abandoned the complicated feelings for Kano and the affection for Kondo by cutting the cherry blossom.

沖田も指摘していたように、土方は加納に対して複雑な感情を感じていたのは事実だと思う。
土方は桜を切ることで、加納に対しての複雑な感情、同時に土方への愛情を捨て去ったのではないだろうか。

[I believe that] by cutting the cherry blossom, Hijikata [rid himself of]* his mixed feelings towards Kano and [his] affection for Kondo.

As Okita pointed out, I think it is true that Hijikata had complicated emotion to Kano.
feeling でも良いですが少し弱いかも。いずれにせよその後の前置詞は for ではなくto。
Hijikata's performance by cutting the cherry tree (branch?) must be an implication of his breakup from the emotion to Kano as well as hidden affection to Kondo.
構成を変えました。まず切ったのはcherry blossomではなく桜の木、または枝ですよね？それを切ることで感情、愛情を捨て去ると言うのが直接的にはわかりにくいので、implication 暗示、含意、としました。
