against この文章ではどの意味が適切ですか

質問

こんにちは。
今、ある文章の英訳をするうえで「againsｔ」の訳し方に困っています。

その文章は
Which of the following is the most relevant for comparing a company's results against?
です。

一応訳してみたのですが
「会社の結果が反しているものを比較するうえで最も適切なものは下記のうちどれか」です。
なんだかよくわかりません・・・

見ていただいて分かるようにこれは問題文となっています。
この解答のカギとなる文章は
My favorite comparison is against the company itself over time. As your mother always said, "Do your best!" Is the company doing its best? Are results improving over time?

選択肢は
A. Its largest competitor
B. itself over time
C. Industry averages
D. The newest competitor
です。

おそらく正解はBだと思うのですが、文章の意味があまり理解できていないのですっきりしません。
against がどのように文章を修飾しているのかがいまいちわかりません。
どなたか教えていただけないでしょうか。

実は、＃6の方からご指摘をうけていますが……。私も、原文に、疑問を持ったままです。
回答後、1カ所だけエラーをしたと思ったことがありました。
>the most relevant = S。the most relevant (thing) = 形容詞の名詞的用法で主語。

(thing) を(way) とするべきだったと思っています。

「最適なことは」ではなく、「最適な方法／状態は」とした場合、against itself over time は、C/M 扱いで文法的には成り立つのではと思いました。

つまり、

「会社の業績を比較するために最適な方法は、次のうちのどれと比べることですか？」
「会社の業績を比較するために最適な状態は、次のうちのどれを比較対象にしている状態ですか？」

のような直訳になると思います。

The most relevant way for comparing a company's results is against itself over time.

今のところ、私は、これで、納得するしか……と思っています。

against で副詞の意味が「反対で」ということが多いせいもあって、
つい前置詞としても「～に反対して」としてしまいましたが、
ここでは compare と相まって「～に対して、比べる」となっています。

against 自体に「～と比べて」的な意味が含まれますので、
compare という動詞と用いるなら with や to の方がふさわしいのですが、
実際には用いられることがあります。
やや redundant な気がしなくもありません。

もう一度念のため言っておきますが、作成者としては
which of the following とつながる、前置詞のつもり。

ただ、意味上でつながるだけで、which of the following が主語
というのが作成者のつもり。

Which room is better for reading in?
「どちらの部屋の方が、（中で）読書するのにいいだろうか」
みたいなものです。

今回だと、「下記のどれが、会社の結果と比べるのに最も適切だろうか」

人 compare 会社の結果 against どれ
という関係を保ちながら
どれ is relevant (for ～)
どれが～するのに適切か
という文を作っています。

He is easy to talk to.「彼は話しかけやすい」
talk to him の関係が成り立つ。
ただし、あくまでも he は主語であり、
関係が成り立つだけで、
To him を主語にできるわけではない。
これがタフ構文です。

My favorite comparison is against the company itself over time.
「私が好む比較は、時間にわたっての会社自身との比較である」
に当てはまるのが B です。

against は前置詞として「～に反対して」となりますが、
多くの前置詞と同様、後にくる名詞なく、
against だけで副詞として「反対して」とすることもできます。

今回、against で終わっています。
多くの方が回答しているように、この against は which of the following とつながって、
結局、普通の前置詞でいい、と考えるのが素直でしょう。

ただし、こういう場合、
What are you interested in?
のように、もともと、what で置き換えられた名詞が最後にあったから可能なのであって、
普通に今回の文をみると、which of the following は主語となります。

基本、主語である名詞と、最後の前置詞は、つながらないはずです。
基本、というのはいわゆるタフ構文と言われる、
This book is difficult to understand.
This book is worth reading.
という構造であれば、
This is easy to look for.
This river is dangerous to swim in.
前置詞と主語は、意味上はつながります。

今回、for comparing O against のような for 内の部分についての against と
主語がつながり得るのか？

This book is good for reading. こういう英語が可能であれば、
すなわち、こういう for 内の reading の目的語が this book である、
今回も Which of the following が主語で、for 内の against とつながることになります。

#5 の方は、which of the following が主語だと無理が生じると考えて、
後の the most relevant の方が主語としているのでしょうが、
relevant for ～とのつながりから考えると、かえって無理が生じるように思います。

あと、which of the following でかたまりなのであって、
これを分解し、かつ of のことなど無視して which … the following
などとして、which を主語として、against the following
とすると、まったく英語の構造を無視したことになります。

What do you like subject?
中学生がつい分割してしまう、この次元ですね。

私としてはちょっと今回、そのように against と主語がつながるのに
無理があると思わなくもないのですが、出題者はそのつもりです。

私も答えは B だと思います。

　company's results とあるところを見ると、これは 「会社の業績」 のことをいっていると見てよいように思えます。

　to compare a company's results against ... は、「ある会社の業績を ・・・ と比較する」 ということになりそうです。

　全体としては、「ある会社の業績を比較するのに、何と比較するとしているのか、以下の項目の中から最もふさわしいものを選びなさい」 といった問いだと思います。

　私が好ましいと思うのは、その会社の業績を時間の経過とともに見ることです。母親から 「ベストを尽くしなさい！」 とよく言われたことがあるでしょう。その会社はベストを尽くしていますか？　業績は時間の経過とともに上向いていますか？

* against ... は対象を示す働きをしていると考えます。against the company であれば 「その会社に対して」 という、外側から客観視する姿勢を表しているように思えます。また、「時間の経過」 と仮に訳しましたが、ミクロ的な時間ではなく、「決算期毎に」 のような、大きな節目、期間のことです。
