この文で なぜ、
All the other guys taked home ～～～～

のようではなく、
got to take home ～～～

なんでしょうか？

使役動詞との関係でしょうか？

意味的にはどのような変化があるのでしょうか？

それならば、と言う事ではないですが、　ある大手会社のトップマネジャークラスの弟子からの回答です。　なぜ、トップになれるかが彼のフィーリングがこもった文章から分かりますね。

I see at lease 2 answers to the question. If the guys were required to take the goldfish home, the words "had to" would have been more appropriate. The words "got to", when used alone indicates that it was a privilege or that they were allowed to do something. If, instead of "got to", the person had said that they "had to", the meaning changes. To use the words in another context may make it clearer.

1) "I got to go to a Karate match!" or "I get to go to a Karate match." are examples receiving the privilege of doing something in the past or present tense.

2) "I have to clean my room" or " I have got to get my homework done." are examples of the action being required. Note the second part where both "have" and "got" are used together. The word "have" makes it mandatory and the word "got" after it adds emphasis or stresses the requirement even more and is often accented when spoken.

When the sentence starts out with "All the other guys", my sense is that the person is saying that he was treated differently than the all of the others. I see two possibilities.

1) The person making the comment could have been the only one excluded from the privilege of being allowed to take a goldfish home. They may have run out of goldfish and he didn't get one or got something else instead like in # 3(lucky).

2 ) Another possibility, is that the boy has just shown up at home with a huge styrofoam box containing a goldfish, and is explaining to his folks, that all of the other guys had the "privilege" of taking the fish home in little plastic bags. For what ever reason he didn't get a small plastic bag. May be they were out and so he used the big box. This would fall under #4 (other) because it is a combination of #2 (permitted) and the last part of #1 (had to)

I would say the it is an even split between the 2 answers.

I think "got to take home" in this instance is a combination of permission and luck. It has the connotation that the person was lucky to be taking home a goldfish instead of something less desirable (like a pencil), and that permission had been granted for him to be allowed to take it home. I don't think the size of the plastic bags is an issue here. Goldfish would normally be taken home in little plastic bags. If the sentence read, "All the other guys got to take home goldfish in 33 gallon garbage bags, it would catch your attention that something was out of the ordinary. Either there is a little fish in an immense bag, or, because goldfish is the same singular or plural, there could be 100 fish in the bag. There is no qualifying statement like, "All the other guys got to take home goldfish in little plastic bags, but I had to use a big bag.", so I don't thing the size of the plastic bags is an issue in this sentence.

Not knowing where this question comes from or if it is a "thought for the
day" my interpretation on this is ...... option #3(lucky to take home). From a childs
perspective it is a small treasure to take home and try to keep it it
growing, to see how long it will live and how big it will get.

私が書いたことと重複しますが,あえて,書きますね。

この文章だけでは,作者の意味が取れないと言う事なんです。

アメリカ人の回答がきていますので,のさせてもらいますね。

The sentence used appears to be only one part of a larger picture, or narrative, that is not available to us.

This is what we refer to in American English as a 'Gray Area'. Your option one (had to) may not be correct as we do not have the complete narrative. Option two (permitted to take home) or three (lucky to take home) may be correct, that is why it is 'gray'. Referring to option two...this implies that all of the other guys behaved well and were permitted to take the fish home as a reward. Option three implies that there was some sort of contest, or behavior reward, and the other guys won, therefore, they 'got to take home' the fish.

This is my humble opinion.

I just turned on my computer and got your message Saturday morning. When I read the sentence the first time, my automatic interpretation was as you described in number 2（permitted to take). The other interpretations are certainly possible (had to, lucky to take), but I would not automatically assume them unless there is some context before or after the sentence that suggests those were the intended meanings.

これで,お分かりと思いますが,なんともいえないということなんですね。　前後する文章によって,フィーリングが変わってくると言う事です。　ラッキー!というのと、持って帰らなくては,というのは,全く違うフィーリングですね。

だからこそ,ここで,一つの文章を載せて,なんと訳せますか,という質問に対しての回答は難しいということになり,また,人それぞれのかに尺の違いが出てくると言う事であり,私の解釈が正しいとか,他の人の解釈適切だと言う討論は,意味のないものとなってしまうんですね。

ですから、こう言う解釈も出来るよ,という回答はいいと思いますが,これでなくてはおかしい,という解答は,それ自体がおかしいと言う事になります。

luckyの部分は,彼ら(上のアメリカ人)はなぜ否定していないと言うと,そのフィーリングを出す為に,よく使われるんですね。　これは、辞書には載っていないようですね。　また,ここのほかの方々も感じないように思われます。　しかし、「小さなひがみ」「うらやましいな」のフィーリングはあると言う事に気がついて欲しいと思います。

そうでしたね,日本語では,ビニール袋って言うんですね。　ごめんなさい,私の間違いです。

補足です。

got to＋原形動詞はhave got to＋原形動詞の口語形として
「～しなくちゃいけない」という意味で使われます。その場合の
発音は gotta となることが多く、漫画などではgottaとつづられて
いることもあります。きちんとした文章ではhaveを落として書いたり、
gottaとつづったりすることはありません。

I have to go.=I've got to go.=I got to go.=I gotta go.
これらは意味は同じで、「行かなくてはいけない」という文です。
注意してほしいのは got to～は「今（から）～しなくてはいけない」
という意味であって、「（過去に）～しなければならなかった」と
いう意味ではないという点です。「行かなければならなかった」は
I had to go.です。ですから、got to take home goldfishを「金魚を
持って帰らなければならなかった」という意味に取ることはできません。
All the other guys had to take home....ならば、「持って帰らなければ
いけませんでした」という意味になります。

ただし、I got to go.には文脈により二つの意味が可能です。
I got to go tomorrow.=I've got to go tomorrow.「明日行かなくちゃ」
I got to go yesterday.「昨日行くことができた」

get to＋原形動詞には「～することを得る⇒～することができる」という
意味があるからです。

このget[あるいは過去形got] to take home＋物、という表現は
「～をもらって帰る、～をもらって帰ってよい」という決まり文句
です。例えば、

We took a trip to our local orchard. We picked our own apples and had a tour of the orchard. We got to take home all the apples we picked. They tasted really good.
「もいだリンゴは全部持ち帰ってよかった」

目的語には、景品やおみやげ、あるいは参加賞などがよく使われます。

Each student will get to take home a free bookmark.
「各生徒は無料のしおりをもらえます」

You get to take home ～.は「（参加[来場]すれば）～を差し上げます」
という意味にもなります。

The ticket includes dinner and entertainment, and you get to take
home a souvenir glass.
「チケットには食事とアトラクションが含まれており、さらに記念のグラスもお持ち帰りいただけます」

ご質問の英文中のgot to take homeに「～せねばならない」という
意味はありません。「ほかの連中はみんな小さなビニール袋に入った
金魚をもらって帰った」という意味です。それから、plastic bagsは
「プラスチックの袋」ではなく、いわゆる「ビニール袋」です。

followさん、 acceptさん、ご指摘有難うございます。　確かにgot to take homeはhad to take homeの意味で取れないことはないですね。

つまり、この場合、小さなプラスチックの袋にいれて持ち帰った人たちではない人たちは、ちゃんと大きなプラスチックの袋にいれて持ち帰る事が出来た、ないしは、バケツなどが支給された、時なんかですね。

つまり、もっと適当な容器があったんだけど、品切れになってしまい、小さな袋しか入れる物がなかった、と言う状況です。

これは、この文章からは残念ながら、判断出来ませんね。　前後の文を参考にしなくてはならないですね。

All the other guysと書いてあることで、２組みのグループがあると言う事が分かります。　どちらのグループのことを言いたいのかが、うまく表現されていないということですね。

つまり、take goldfish homeをいいたいのか、in little plastic bagsを言いたいのかで、意味が違ってくると言う事ですね。

と言う事は、このlittle platic bagsの部分がなければ、「良いな、家に(お土産としてか)持ち帰る事が出来て!」と言う意味と「金魚が入っていた水槽が壊れてしまったので、みんなで分けて持ち帰って、しばらく家で飼う事になった」と言う二つの意味にもなりますね。

と言う事で、前後する文章がなければ、次のようにすれば意味が分かり易かったのにと思います。

小さな袋しかなかった、(acceptさんが感じる「持ち帰らなくてはならなかった」のフィーリングですね)と言う意味あいであれば、There are only little plastic bags left and no more large ones available, so all the other guys had to take home goldfish in them.

いいな、であれば、We got (received) only origami paper! All the other guys were lucky enough to take home gold fish. And they used little plastic bags.

つまり、この作者は二つの事を一つの分に入れてしまったため、フィーリングがうまく表現できなかったと言う例だ、ともいえますね。

こういう事はいいとして。

All the other guysの前の文に違う行動をとった「私」「彼/彼女」「数人」いずれかの事を記述しているはずです。All the other guysに含まれない人物の行動について描写されているでしょう。
そしてAll the other guysは「got to take home ～～～」ということなのです。

つまり「持って帰らなければならなかった」と意味ですね。

妬むというよりもむしろAll the other guysに含まれないいずれかの人物の方がより望ましい結果だったように受け取れます。

私が思うに、「got to」は「しなければいけない」という意味なんじゃないでしょ
うか？なんとなくなんで、参考程度に扱ってください。

私がチャットで「私はいかなきゃいけないの」っていう時
"I got to go now"とか使用します。
他のアメリカ人もそう使用する時ありあす。
はっきり辞書とかで意味をしらべた事はありませんが、
そういうニュアンスがあるのでは、と思います。

でもNo.1さんの意見はある意味正しいと思われます。
なんせ35年もすんでらっしゃるから！
でも私がいいたいのは、「got to」は上記のように使用
されるという事です。

アメリカに３５年ほど住んでいる者です。

私なりに説明させていただきますね。

例文の和訳としたら、All the other guys took homeでいいのですね。

しかし、ここで、got to takeという言い方で、「いいな、いいな、持ち帰ることができて!」というフィーリングを出しているのですね。

つまり、する事が出来た、という事でね。　でも、この中に、「小さな妬み」のフィーリングが入ってくることで、they were able to takeやThey could takeと言う表現をしていなんですね。

つまり、くじ引きで勝ったのか、何らかの理由で、自分はもらえなかったけど、彼らはもらう事が出来た、ということなんですね。

これは、the other guysということで、また、allと追加する事により、自分はもらえなかったという事をより強く表現しています。

He got to take home goldfishでも、同じフィーリング(出来たという事と少しの妬み)を出していることになります。

これでいいでしょうか。　分からない点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

英文の訳はGanbatteruyoさんの回答どおり、「持ち帰ることができて」です。
英文の訳仕方だけでなく、文法の解説や文法に沿った理解の仕方を知りたくて
締め切りを延ばしていました。
そのうちに、自分のほうも忙しくなってしまい、締め切るのが遅れてしまいました。
さらに、お正月をはさんでしまい、ここのサイトにアクセスできないなど、いろいろありまして、ずるずると引きずってしまいました。
