The Hayabusa Project was very ambitious. JAXA set very difficult goals for the mission: developing ion engines, developing an autonomous navigation system, collecting soil samples from Itokawa, and bring them back. Since asteroids like Itokawa date from the beginning of our solar system, such samples will help solve the mysteries of our system's origin. This would be unprecedented in the history of space exploration.

それとこの英文のようにSince文の最初の来て完了形で用いられていない場合があるのですがこの場合のsinceはどういう意味ですか?

since ～は「～以来、から」という前置詞・接続詞用法以外に
「～だから、なので」という理由を表す接続詞の場合があります。

日本人は as ～で理由を好みますが、特にアメリカでは理由の意味では as を用いず、
since がよく使われます。

普通には because ～で理由ですが、「～である以上」のような意味合いで since はよく使われます。

Since ～, が前置する場合は理由の場合が多いです。

無理やりには「～から」が「～だから」という理由になる、
くらいに覚えておけばいいです。
