1を示すとき、aとoneがあるように思うのですが、両者の意味的な区別はどうなのでしょうか？
例えば、
"It's for a month"　と　"It's for one month"　ではどのように意味が異なってくるのでしょうか？

もともと a は one → an → a と変化しました。
だから，基本 a は「１つの」し，
今では普通には for a month です。

one を使うのは強調的。
one and a half months「ひと月半」
は one を使うしかありません。

a month and a half は可。

the one month
that one month
のように，one は他の限定詞とともに使えますが，
a は自動的に消えます。

two dogs and one cat のように他の数詞と併用したり，
another/others との対比は one のみ。
only one ～は「たった１つの～」
only a ～は「ほんの～」
