ふと疑問に思ったことですが

質問

Japan's traditional era name will be changed when a succession to the imperial throne takes place.
(日本の伝統的な年号は、皇位の継承があった場合に変わることになっている）

上記は参考書の例文ですが、
「will be changed」　が　「will change」　では意味が通じなくなるのでしょうか。また、「succession to the」 の 「to」 は 「of」ではまずいのでしょうか。

意味は通じると思います。
Japan's traditional era name will be changed (by people)...
[日本の伝統的な年号は変えられる（変わる事になっている）]

Japan's traditional era name will change...
[日本の伝統的な年号は変わる事になっている]

どちらでもいいと思います。人によって、ある決まりに従って変えられるという意味合いを出したければ受動態にすればいいと思いますが、どちらでもいいと思います。

succession to the imperial throneで皇位の継承です。

successionは、連続という意味と（遺産等の）相続、（皇位等の）敬称という意味があります。
皇位の継承は、
succession to the throneで王位継承です。

a succession of rainy daysというと連続した雨の日ということで、雨天続きという意味になります。

王位継承を表す時はsuccession to the throneと覚えておかれたらいいと思います。

will changeでもいいと思います。a succession of　だと「一連の」という別のイディオムになりませんか。

succession toー

でーの相続という意味です。
