問26
次の( )の語について,その形が現在時制・過去時制・原形・現在分詞・過去分詞・動名詞のいずれであるか答えなさい。ただし,「原形」とは不定詞「to + 原形」の原形部分も含むものとする。
To possess any art or skill, one must have the habit of (1)working according to the rules of that skill. And there is no other way of forming a habit of working, than by working. That is what it means to say that one learns to do something by doing it. The difference between your activity before and after you have (2)formed a habit is that difference between doing something with difficulty and (3)doing it rather easily. After practice, you can do the same thing much better than when you (4)started. In other words, practice makes perfect.
(5)Knowing the rules of a skill is not the same as having a habit. When we speak of a man as having a skill, we do not mean that he knows the rules of making or doing something, but that he possesses the habit of making or doing it. It is true that knowing the rules is part of learning the skill. You cannot follow rules that you do not know. Nor can you have a habit - any habit - without following the rules.
Learning to read well is like (6)learning any other activity. You must practice until you can follow the rules and (7)perform the separate acts of reading without thinking about them. But to (8)forget them as separate acts, you must learn them first as separate acts. Only then can you (9)put them together to become a good reader.
Each separate act requires all of your attention while you are (10)doing it. After you have (11)practiced the parts separately, you cannot only do each one better and with less attention but you can also gradually join them together into a whole. And when that happens, and you no longer (12)need to think about how you are (13)reading, you can devote all of your attention to what you are reading, to (14)increasing your understanding.
We hope we have encouraged you by the things we have said in these pages. It is hard to learn to read well. Not only is (15)reading, especially analytical reading, a very difficult activity but it is also much more of a mental activity. It is fairly easy to (16)think of physical acts; it is much harder to think of mental acts, as the beginning analytical reader must do. He must think about his own thoughts, and most of us are not (17)accustomed to (18)doing this. Nevertheless, it can be (19)done, and a person who does it cannot help (20)learning to read much better."
