添付辞書の2番目の使い方 They are in a/the group of the first to reach .. この場合のgroupとは学校のクラスまたは寄宿舎・学校にいる人達を示すと思います。 彼らはクラス(学校）のなかで最初（NO1)である。 どんな？ to reachは”行く”もしくは"着く” だから、”真っ先”の訳で正しい。

'the first' は「the＋形容詞」の用法で 'the first people'（最初の人たち）を意味しています。 また、'to reach the Great Hall at dinner' は 'the first' を 修飾しています。 以上より原文を直訳すると 「彼らは夕食のとき最初に大広間に来た人たちの中にいて～」 となります。 また、 'Theｙ were among the first to reach the Great Hall at dinner' は 'They were one of the first to reach the Great Hall at dinner' と同じ意味で、 「彼らは夕食のとき最初に大広間に来た人たちで」 という意味になります。

こんにちは、 まずは、the firstの復習です。 序数詞firstにtheがつくのは、一般に形容詞用法か名詞用法です。 そこで、英和辞書などにも解説があると思うのですが、名詞用法のfirstに 「・・・する最初の人」の意味で「the first to do」の例文が載っていると思います。 ジニーアス英和には、 He was the first to raise his hand. 彼が最初に手をあげた という例文が載っていました。 ＞the first to reach the Great Hall 直訳：大広間に着いた最初の人 ＞"among"は（三つ以上の）～の間に、のうちでという意味なので その通りの意味で、使われており、 ＞They were among the first to reach the Great Hall at dinner, 直訳：彼らは最初に夕食のときに大広間についた人の中にいた。 これを意訳したのが日本語訳の文章だと思います。 ご参考までに

回答いただきありがとうございました。 確かにそのとおりですね。 「彼ら三人だけが真っ先に」というのはあまり考えられないですね。 夕食は小学生にとっては楽しみのひとつですから、ハグリットに興味を持ってない人でも夕食に、いの一番に行く人も当然いるでしょうから。 そのグループの中に(among)ハリー、ロン、ハーマイオニーがいたと考えるのが当然ですね。 だから、They were among the first to...なのですね。
