「補足コメント」を拝見しました。
確かに、互換可能の場合はあるかも知れませんね。ただし、微妙ですが、次のことが言えると思います。

（A）otherwiseの位置にelseを使う際は、何か別の語句を加える必要がある。例えば、(3) のIt will prevent catching your finger on the crack but will do little otherwise / anything else. のように、この場合はanythingを加える。

（B）otherwiseの-wiseの原義は「～のように」ですから、細かいことを言えば、elseは「事柄」について、otherwiseは「様態」について言うのに用いられる、と見ることができると思います。それで、(1) のI've done little else but find out about themのelseをotherwiseに置き換えることには無理があるかも知れません。（なお、すみませんが、thatの件は、私も分かりません）。

ということで、do little elseとdo little otherwiseとは、極めて類似するニュアンスを表すが、全く同じではなく、無条件に互換できるわけでもない、と考えられます。

以上、不十分ながら、再伸まで。

⇒littleは「ほとんど～ない」、elseは「他に・別に」、otherwiseは「別の方法・仕方で」という意味ですので、次のような意味の違いがあると思います。

do little else：「ほかにはあまりするな」、つまり、「他のことはあまりするな」。
do little otherwise：「ほかの仕方であまりするな」、つまり、「やり方をあまり変えるな」。

微妙ですが、以上のようなニュアンスの違いがあると言えます。

補足

下記の2例のようにotherwiseを「それ以外」と日本語に訳したほうがしっくりくるので、do little else but...「...のほかにはほとんど～しない」とdo little otherwise「それいがいほとんど～しない」と、日本語にするとおなじような意味になってしまうが、英語でもそうなのか、互換可能なのか知りたくて投稿しました。
she usually stays at the Sheraton hotel, but she occasionally stays otherwise.(それ以外のところで）
