犬が、獲物が隠れている木に向かって吠えている、という喩えからきています。

逆に、「それは見当違いだよ！」というときには、
You're baking up the wrong tree! と言います。

それだけこの表現が使われているということです。

このＢさんの答えは完全に狂っています。

Ａさんは、これはＸだけに使うもの、それともＹでも使えるの？
と聞いているのに、どうして、barking up the tree になるのですか？

答えになっていません。

それに、barking up the right tree　というような表現はしません。bark up
はイヌが木に登った獲物に吠えついているのだから、基本的に間違っている場合に
「見当違いだよ」と言う意味で、you are barking up the wrong tree と言うのです。
大当たり、と言いたいならまさに　you hit the nail on the head　ですよ。
