英単語の微妙な意味の違い

質問

strictとsevereの違いはわかるのですが、sternとstrict,severeの違いがはっきりとわかりません。教えてください。

英英辞典を引けば、普通はその違いが分かるようになります。

Ｎｏ，１です。自分で引用した文ですが、自分で読んでいてもあまり意味が取れないので、辞書を引き引き翻訳してみました。でも、あまりいい説明ではないですね。
No.2のrukukuさんご紹介のOxford の辞書の次の説明の方がずっと良いですね。
以下はOxfordでの説明：
stern:相手を認めない態度であり、相手に服従を求めているような厳しさ。
severe:飾り気がなく、親切心や同情心を感じることのない厳しさ。
strict:正確に規則に従うことを求めるような厳しさ。

以下は、Ｎｏ．１で引用したAmerican Heritageの一応の訳です。でも、あまり良い訳にはなっていません。ごめんなさい。

はじめまして

私にもわかりません(^_^;)
しかし、外国語を勉強している者としてのアドバイスは出来ます。

言葉は、まるで生き物か雲であるかのように、その時々で意味が変わります。
どのような場面で使われるのか、また話し言葉であれば話し手の表情や口調によっても変わってきます。

英英辞典は英単語がどういう意味を持っているのか、文例集は自分が表現したい内容でその単語が使用されているかを調べるのに使っています。

そのようなツールはあるのですが、「言葉の使い方」というのは、たくさん聞いて、たくさん読んで、そして話したこと、書いたことがちゃんと伝わっているか確認しながら勉強していかなければわからないものだと思っています。
