和訳
下の文の自然な和訳が難しいのでヒントをお願いしたいです。
一文目の”申し入れがあった”ことに対して、”25単語を超えなかった”とつながるのにthereforeの”したがって”はおかしくないですか？俳句は自由なものなはずなのに、厳格な定義を求められたため25単語という定義ができてしまった、というような意味でしょうか？
また、その後のchallengeもわかりません。何に対する”明らかに恐るべき挑戦”なのでしょうか？
Fifteen persons who are well known in the area of English-language haiku (mainly haiku editors) were asked if they would like to submit a definition of what they consider to be an ideal English-language haiku--a definition that theoretically could be included in an abridged (not unabridged) collegiate type dictionary.
Therefore, the definition was not to exceed 25 words.
Admittedly a formidable challenge.
The formulators were not to feel their definition had to be all inclusive, but to indicate those of 'Modern Haiku' editors, who exchanged theirs on the same day before the letters of invitation were sent.
