確かに、英和辞典などの訳語が「たった一人で、孤独で」（ジーニアス英和大辞典より抜粋）のようになっているので、勘違いしやすいのですが、aloneという語は単数の名詞にのみ使うと思うと違うのです。

They were alone together at last.
Leave those fungi alone! They might be poisonous. (fungiはキノコの意味です）

このように複数形名詞にaloneを使うこともしばしばあります。ですから、お示しの文の場合、
When I am alone, . . . と言っても言えますが、
When I am alone with my brotherとか言うことも可能なのであり、そういう可能性をすべて排除するには
When I am alone with myself, . . .
と言えるのです。
もっとも、When I am alone, だけでも、普通はひとりだけという意味にとれます。
ですから、強調しているだけと考えても結構ですが、やはり、一瞬でもI am aloneだけでは自分以外の人も一緒に言っている可能性があるかなと思わせることを断ち切るという意味では、with myselfをつけるのは意味のあることです。

逆に
I was together with Tom. という場合、
I was with Tom. とだけでも言えます。しかし、これだと、一緒にいたのか、あるいは「声をあわせた」のか、「トムの味方になった」のか、微妙に迷う可能性もあります。そこで、togetherと入れるわけです。これでより明確になるわけです。

I am together with him.
I am alone with myself.
100％反対の関係というのではないにしても、この２つの文を並べてみると、さらに理解が深まるのではないかと思います。

alone という語でけだと 「ひとりでいる」 「孤独である」 「さみしい」 と、ニュアンスの異なる意味が派生するので、「自分の他には他に誰もいない状態」 を表すには、ことさらに with myself をつけて意味を特定するということをするようです。

下記のページのタイトルは When You Can't Stand Being Alone with Yourself で、to be alone with oneself という表現が用いられています。これも１つの例になろうかと思います。
