Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Understanding the Meaning of 'due to'
このQ&Aのポイント
- In the book 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire', there is a line spoken by Mr. Crouch that says, 'I have no use for a servant who forgets what is due to her master, and to her master’s reputation'. This raises questions about the meaning of the phrase 'due to' and how it should be translated.
- The Japanese translation of the line is 'I have no use for a servant who forgets what is due to her master, and to her master’s reputation', but it may be unclear why this translation was chosen. In order to understand the meaning of 'due to' in this context, it is necessary to consider the loyalty and respect that a servant owes to their master.
- The phrase 'due to' in this context can be understood as referring to the actions and behaviors that are expected and appropriate in relation to someone's position or role. due to ~で「~のために」という感じで because of ~などと同じ と説明されることが多いですが,そういう「~のために~する」 と副詞的にかかるのは本来の用法ではありません。 (誤用という人もいます) 本来,due は形容詞であり,be 動詞の後にきたり,名詞を後ろから修飾して (due to ~というセットで後ろから) 「主語は~に起因する,帰すべきものである」というふうに用います。 This accident is due to his careless driving. 本来の用法 This accident happend due to his careless driving. because of ~などにすべきもの すなわち,what is due to ~で「~に起因するもの」 「~が原因となって存在するもの」 主人そのもの,そして,主人の名声が原因となっているもの を忘れてしまう これが直訳です。
