#2の方もおっしゃっているように文法的には下の１も２も共に正しいです。 ただし、わが国の学校文法では触れられていないように思いますが、このような制限[限定]用法では２よりも１の方がより普通のようです。 1. Look at the mountain of which the top is covered with snow. 2. Look at the mountain the top of which is covered with snow. この点は、例えば著名な”A Comprehensive Descriptive Grammar of English”(R. Declerck, 1991、翻訳は『現代英文法総論』（開拓社）のp.764)は、以下の組み合わせのうちそれぞれ#4よりも#3の方が、#6よりも#5の方が「普通である」と書いています。 3. Where are the books of which many are said to be very old? 4. Where are the books many of which are said to be very old? 5. This is the book of which some pages are missing. 6. This is the book some pages of which are missing.

Look at the mountian the top of which is covered with snow. は両方とも正しい英文です。 強いて言えば２の方が多少わかり易い意味があります。of which the top は仮に文法的に正しいとしても語順が逆立ちしているので直感的には呑み込みにくいのですね。

それぞれitで置き換えてみたらおわかりになると思います。 > Look at the mountain whose top is covered with snow. Look at the mountain. It's top is covered with snow. > Look at the mountain the top of which is covered with snow. Look at the mountain. The top of it is covered with snow. > Look at the mountain of which the top is covered with snow Look at the mountain. Of it the top is covered with snow.
