立命館大の英語の問題（2008年）

質問

今年の立命館大の英語の入試問題でどうしても分からない問題があります。英語のデキる方、教えてください！
「俳優業は、安定した生活を送るには最も困難な職業に挙げられる。」
The acting profession（1 hardest 2 in 3 is 4 of 5 one 6 the 7 which) to make a steady living.
( )内を並び替えなさいという問題です。( )内の語はすべて使います。

二つの簡略表現含まれています。
一つ目はhardestのあとのprofessions。
つまり補えば
The acting profession is one of the hardest (professions) in which to make a steady living.
となり、同じ語を繰り返すのを避けるために省略されるもの。
その際one of theの表現に従って複数形になります。

二つ目はin which to make a steady livingはもう少し単純な形で考えたほうが理解しやすいでしょう。

一般に
a book which we should read
＝a book to read
といった関係が成立し、そのため発展形として
a knife with which we cut apples
=a knife with which to cut apples
(=a knife to cut apples withも可）
と、前置詞を利用して幅を広げたり
「自動詞＋前置詞」で他動詞と同等に使って
a cottage in which we can live in
=a cottage in which to live
(=a cottage to live inも可）　
などとします。

この問題に即して考えれば
the hardest (professions) in which to make a steady livingは
the hardest professions in which we can make a steady livingの意味になります。

全体を再構成すると作文して出来上がる英文は
The acting profession is one of the hardest professions in which we can make a steady living.
と同等の内容を伝える、簡略表現です。
