よくi am of help... という構文を見かけるのですが、これはbe動詞プラスofのイディオムなんですか？

というより、「of＋抽象名詞＝形容詞」の公式です。
of (great) importance ＝ (very) important
of use ＝ useful, of no use ＝ useless
of (some) help ＝ (a little) helpful

a person of courage 勇気のある人
a matter of importance 重大な事柄（＝ an important matter）
a boy of ten (years)＝ a ten-year-old boy

This book is of (great) interest [importance, value, use].
この本は(大いに)興味深い[重要だ, 価値がある, 役に立つ].
＝ This book is (very) interesting/important/valuable/useful.
