Option1: A certificate for $5 off a total purchase of $25 or more.

Option 2: 10% off any one accessory.

what advice would you give to Kathy to help her determine which option she must choose to save the most money? show the mathematics you used to decide what your advice would be.

Kathy, you should choose Option 1 if your total purchase is between $ 25 and $ 50. And otherwise, you should choose Option 2.

The reason is that if your total purchase is under $ 25, you cannot get any discount if you choose Option 1, on the other hand, you can get 10% discount in case Option 2. And if your total purchase is over and equal to $ 25 and under $ 50, if you choose Option 1, then your discount is $ 5, on the other hand, if you choose Option 2, you certainly get discount, but it is only $ 2.5 or a little higher but under $ 5, and this is lower than $ 5 which is discount in the case of Option 1.

But Kathy, if your total purchase is over $ 50, discount becomes higher if you choose Option 1, not Option 2. In the case that your total purchase is just $ 50, discount in Option 1 is $ 5 and that in Option 2 is $ 5, so you may choose either Option 1 or Option 2 because their discount values are same.

Option2は一個につき10%と書いてありますが、全部の10%でも結果は同じなので合計額で求めてもOKです。
（例：$10の品物10個買おうが、$100の品物1個でも割り引き額は$10です。）
xが合計購入額、yが割引額とすると、Option2の式は「y = 0.1x」
Option1の式は、xが25以上という条件付で「y = 5」

◆合計支払い額が$0～$24.99の場合◆
Option1は支払いが$25以上の時に$5発生しますよね。
ということは$25未満は全く割引がないという事なので、少しでも割引があるOption2の方がお徳です。

◆合計支払い額が$25以上$50未満の場合◆
この時、Option1では$5の割引になります。
Option2のほうは10%の割引なので$50未満だと、割引額は$5未満になってしまいますのでOption1の方がお徳です。

◆合計支払い額が$50以上の場合◆
Option1はどんなに買おうと割引額は$5で一定ですが、Option2は購入額に比例して割り引いてくれます。
式をグラフにしてあげると一目瞭然ですが、x=50の時に二つの割引額が同じになり、$50以上だと、Option2のほうが割り引き額が高くなります。
