私が英訳すると
By determining the ratio of isotope to normal carbon in bone and charcoal, the specimens were found to be 17500 to 18300 years old.
こんな感じ感じになりました。

carbon「炭素」には質量数がそれぞれ12, 13, 14 の３種類があります。
このような同一元素でありながら，質量数の異なるものが複数存在する元素を同位体 isotope と言います。

an isotope of carbon といえば carbon-12, carbon-13, carbon-14 のいずれかを表します。

ここでは放射性同位体である carbon-14 を表していますが，特に12とか14というのは問題でないため，まず a type of carbon「炭素の一種」と言っておいて，単に a type「一つの型」だと不明瞭なので，an isotope of carbon と言い直しています。

an type of carbon, or an isotope of carbon というのを簡潔に，かつ明確にしたのが
a type, or isotope, of carbon です。

a type of の部分にコンマにはさまれる形で挿入することになります。

ここでは an isotope of carbon は carbon-14 を表していますが，単に an isotope でこの14の方を表すわけではありません。
