構文を教えてください。

質問

こんにちは。今回は、構文が良く分からなくてお聞きします。

Communication itself between people is so frightening that
rather than do that there is continual cross-talk, a continual
talking about other things, rather than what is
at the root of their relationship.

so～that構文で、that以下が、よくわかりません。
rather than以下that節there～cross-talkまでがdoの目的語の
ようになっているんでしょうが、次のa continual～thingsの働きは
何ですか？「留まることの無いクロストークがあると与えるというより
むしろ、a continual～things」だということでしょうか？

そしたら、また次のrather以下の役割もいまいちつかめません。
訳は結構ですので、それぞれの役割を教えていただけると
幸いです。

すでに No.1 の方が構文に関しては答えを出していますので、解釈の際の考え方を補足させていただきます。

ご自分ですでに so ～ that 構文だと見抜かれているわけですから、この that が接続詞であることはご承知と思います。
接続詞の that ですから、この後は独立した完全な文が来ます。ですから Communication itself between people is so frightening that の部分はいったん頭から除いて、
Rather than do that there is continual cross-talk, ～ という文章をあらためて解釈しようと考えればいいわけです。

そうすると、この文章は there is + 主語 のパターンだとすぐ気づくのではないでしょうか。
そして、there is + 主語の前に来るのは修飾語句でしょうから、
（Rather than do that）there is continual cross-talk ～ とかっこでくくってみれば、
この that が代名詞の「それ」だと気づきやすくなります。

後は No.1 の方のおっしゃる通り、continual cross-talk と a continual talking about other things ～ が「同格」です。

念のため、簡単な訳らしきものを部分ごとに示してみます。

Communication itself between people is so frightening that
（人との間のコミュニケーション自体は非常に人を怖れさせるものなので）

rather than do that
（コミュニケーションを図るよりむしろ）

there is continual cross-talk,
（実際に人が行うのは、絶えざるクロストークなのだ）

真のコミュニケーションにはこわい面があるため、(2)それを避け、(1)無意味な会話に走り、(2)お互いの関係の根に関わる話題を避け、(1)その他の話題をもっぱらにする。

continual は、さほど口数を要しない真の communication と異なり、うわべの会話は口数だけが多くなるという意味合いでしょう。

cross-talk は電子用語で２つの通信回線の間の混信による雑音を言います。

正しいかどうか自信がありませんが、以下のように考えれば、内容は理解できます。

骨格は　Communication is so frightening that there is cross-talk.

a talking about other things 以下は cross-talk の説明（同格）。

rather than what is at the root of their relationship は、 other things と比較されている。

rather than do that = rather than do communication は、that以下全部と比較するための挿入句。
