Is Slow Eating a Privilege? Finding a Balance Between Enjoyment and Social Pressure
Many people dismiss the issue of slow eating, but it can be important to those who prefer to savor their food. This article explores the question: is slow eating a privilege?
The author, who grew up in a middle-class family, acknowledges their privilege but also values the act of savoring food. They have raised this topic with various friend groups, only to be met with responses that they should eat faster and check their privilege.
The author questions whether their preference for slow eating is elitist and selfish, and wonders if there is a safe and appropriate way to discuss this issue without compromising their enjoyment of food or resorting to drastic measures.

This may seem a nonproblem, but it’s important to me: I’m a slow eater. I don’t make people sit at the table for hours as I languidly pick at my plate, but I’m often finishing my first helping while others are on their seconds, thirds, or beyond. In fact, I rarely get a chance for additional helpings, even when I’m the hostess. (Which I frequently am, making tons of food.)
I’ve brought this up with several friend groups only to be told that I just need to eat faster, be like the group, and check my privilege. I admit that I grew up an only child in a middle-class family who never had to fight for food, but I prefer savoring to shoveling. My old-fashioned parents had a rule about not taking seconds until others at the table had finished firsts, but I’m aware of the privilege that implies. Am I being elitist and selfish? Is there a safe, appropriate way to discuss this? Do I have other choices besides eating faster, being hungry, or finding new friends?
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=privilege
A word used by some people to relay that they are telepathic and know what the other person's circumstances are, and what they were thinking when they said or did something.
I’m aware of the privilege that implies
☆ check my privilege:「私の特別扱い(を抑えるように言われた)」。
☆ I’m aware of the privilege that implies:「
