Why is the license plate of the car running ahead yellow?
- I would like to inquire about articles. Why is the license plate of the car running ahead yellow? Could you please put 'a/the' in (1)~(4) while asking the driver in the passenger seat? Also, if you ask what does a yellow license plate mean in general, not referring to a specific car, I think it is more natural to say 'What do yellow license plates mean?' And, as for 'running/driving' in 'running/driving ahead,' which one is correct? Can both be used? Thank you very much.

「黄色のナンバープレート」という「制度」のことですのですべて the でいいでしょう。 黄色のナンバーにもいくつか(色の濃さ、線の太さや本数など)段階などがあって、そのうちの一例なら a もあり得るでしょうが、the の方が状況的に正しいと思います。

(1)-(4) 全部 the で良いです。 運転手と助手席の人は、目の前を走る同じ車とナンバープレートを見ている。つまり、「あの」前を走る車。「あの」黄色のナンバープレート。 このように特定できるものは定冠詞が付きます。 「黄色のナンバープレートってどういう意味?」この場合、aもtheもありで、それぞれ前提条件に違いがでてきます。 What does a yellow license plate mean? 黄色のナンバープレートは何の意味ですか？ ナンバープレートに白、緑、黄色があるとは知らず、またそのプレートを話しかける人と一緒に見ているわけではない時。 What does the yellow license plate mean? 黄色のナンバープレートを話し相手と一緒に見ている時や、ナンバープレートに白、緑、黄色があると知っていてその中で黄色は？と言う時。 What do the yellow license plates mean? 黄色のナンバープレートの車が沢山あってそれを一緒に見ているか会話の中で共通の認識がある時。 「前を走っている」は、running ahead of us が良いと思います。driveだとあくまでも主語は人間。

以下のとおりお答えします。（誤植訂正付） ＞1 Why is （the）license plate of （the）car running ahead is yellow? ＞2 Why does （the）car driving ahead have （a）yellow license plate? ＞助手席で運転手に聞いている状態で、（１）~（４）にa/theを入れて頂けないでしょうか？ ＞また、黄色のナンバープレートってどういう意味とする場合、その車ではなく一般的に何を意味するかを問うならWhat do yellow license plate mean?と複数にするのが自然だと思うのですが、最後に「前に走っている」はrunning/drivingどちらが正しいのでしょうか？両方使えるものでしょうか？ ⇒What do yellow the license plates mean?/ What does yellow the license plate mean? 確かに、前者がより一般的と思いますが、どちらも使えると思います。 また、「前に走っている」は、running/drivingのどちらでも大丈夫です。
