On Sunday, the cheerful student who was born blind capped his young career with a performance that moved the crowd and won the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas.

capが～を完成する,締めくくるという意味なら終わったということになって、今彼はまだ引退していないので事実と矛盾するんですが、どういうことでしょう？

surpassの3番使用でしょう。

はっきりとは知りませんが、
ignition cap
は雷管（弾丸の発火させる部分）の意味があるので、爆発させるとか意味が、発火させるとかそういう感じで使われているのかもしれません。
