The entry for hime-yuri (star lily,literally “maiden lily”)in any Japanese dictionary
includes,almost without exception, this poem as a usage example .
The poem itself is a touching one, but more than that,it is generally recognized by scholars as containing the earliest appearance of the word hime-yuri in an ancient text.
In this poem,however,the star lily itself is not described rather, it is employed as a young girl whose unrequited longing is highly developed in ancient Japanese waka poetry.
