以下のとおりお答えします。

＊会社の利益を社会に還元するという考えではなく～であった：was not the idea that it should return the company's / its profits to society but was rather ～。was not … but was rather ～は、「…でなく、むしろ～であった」。お書きのis to return own company's profits to society rather than they did not bother society（＝社会を悩まさないことより会社の利益を社会に還元する）のis… rather than ～は逆で「～よりむしろ…である」の意味になってしまいます。なお、theyで「会社員」を表しているおつもりだと思いますが、分かりにくくなりますので、「企業」を受けてitを使う方がいいでしょう。

他の方にもご指摘いただいていますが、rather thanが逆だったのですね。
notの否定形を入れる必要があったんですね。
inconvenienceで初めは文章を作っていたのですが、わざわざbotherに変えました。それが無意味でしたね笑。
botherは「悩ます」という意味なんですね。

まずはね，rather than の前後が逆。また，「責任はこうだ」と考えた主体がわからない。もっと平易に書いたらどうですか：

At that time, companies thought that their social responsibility was to avoid wrong things. They aimed to prevent environmental pollution and violation of laws, but they had no idea of returning their profits to the society.
