Traveling from Japan-NY
Hi, I'm about to make a travel from japan to New York City on March 21st. I'm from Los Angeles but I've been out the USA for many years so, I'm a little nervous about my trip to the big City (I'm traveling Alone by the way).
I Would love to Hear some travel tips, Airport Hacks or any Recommendation you Could Give me. I need to know where to eat, How to move Around the City (I heard about a Taxi service called uber and https://shuttlewizard.com ), Touristic places to visit and Hotel recommendations (I'm ALSO Booking Accommodation at http://booking.com ).
Thank you so much!
It looks curious question to ask about NYC to Japanese people which I'm still wondering if you are serious or teasing. But just in case.
As I haven't used uber in NYC, I have no reference on it. But generally I don't like to take taxi there as far as I can find good connections in the subway system. One of the reason is that the ground transportation have heavy traffic very often and taxi drivers try to find detour that make me nervous because I don't know whether they are reliable and knowledgeable. Another is credit card payment system. Taxies are equipped with devices for credit card payment, but how to use it is different in each company. Also devices suggest amount of tip which is 25% as implying minimum rate. Way too much! Subway is convenient and safe if you stay in major part of the city. There are a lot of passengers visiting from Asia, Europe and everywhere for sightseeing, I don't even feel I'm a stranger there. Streets in the city are laid like a grid. So walking around with a map is not difficult.
When I find a restaurant, I'm still relying on yelp.com even though it has been alleged sometime for its fairness in deal with restaurants. If you select a restaurant with four stars or more in Yelp, which you can find easily in your around at various price ranges as it's NYC, you may not be disappointed.
Places to go, too many. Also many web based travel guides covers advices from many different angles. I usually look at TripAdviser.com first, and then collect other information through web search simply by "place to go NYC top ranking" .There are so many great museums like MET and American Museum of National History and you can't have too enough time to see what you may want. At night, Broadway is definitely the place to think about at first. Otherwise, you still have many choices. Live houses, concert, night view of Manhattan from an observatory in a skyscraper or Brooklyn side of East River.
I hope this would help.
