上記の英文の four of themとone of them　の　themは、何を指してるのですか？

what というか、なぞなぞの答えでしょうね。

what という単語自体は単数扱いですが、
それを受ける代名詞として them を選んでいます。

like の後にくるのが複数であるように、複数がいわゆる総称を表しやすい。

そういう意味で、複数の them を選んだのであり、
what を指したもの、というわけではないかもしれません。
