源氏物語の翻訳について

質問

いつもお世話になっています。
A.WaleyのTALE OF GENJI（KIRITSUBO)から
わからないところを教えていただければと思います。

1）

『Ｔhough it seemed a shame to put so lovely a child into man's dress he was now twelve years old and the time for his Initiation was come.　The Emperor directed the preparations with tireless zeal and insisted upon a magnificence beyond what was prescribed.』

●とても愛らしい子供が成人の男性の衣装を身につけることは残念なことと思われたけれども、彼は今12歳になり、そして時は彼の儀式のために来た。帝は不断の情熱を持って準備を導き、定められたことを越えて壮麗を強く主張した・・・・・？

the time for his Initiation was come.の正しい直訳がわかりません。（the time was come for his Initiationと並び変えて訳したのですが）

was comeと受動態になっているのはなぜですか？（受動態を考えるとhis Initiationを主語にして訳した方がいいのか。。。。？？）

『The Initiation of the Heir Apparent, which had last year been celebrated in the Southern Hall, was not a whit more splendid in its preparations. The ordering of the banquets that were to be given in various quarters, and the work of the Treasure and Grain Intendant he supervised in person, fearing lest the officials should be remiss; and in the end all was perfection.』

●後継者の儀式、それは去年南の館で祝われ、その準備の中で少しも見事なものではなかった。
いろんな部屋に与えられたごちそうの注文、そして彼（帝）が自ら管理したthe Treasure and Grain Intendant（内蔵寮と穀倉院）の仕事、役人たちを恐れないことは不注意であっただろう。最後に、すべては完璧だった・・・・・？

the Treasure and Grain Intendant（内蔵寮と穀倉院）・・・ここは英訳がよくわからなかったので現代訳を参考にしました。

fearing・・・恐れないこと？

the pfficials should be remiss・・・・・・可能性のshouldですか？

3）

『The ceremony took place in the eastern wing of the Emperor's own apartments, and the Throne was placed facing towards the east, with the seats of the Initiateto-be and his Sponsor (the Minister of the Left) in front.』

●その儀式は帝自身の部屋の東の廂で行われた。そして後継者は前にいるthe Initiateto-be (加冠の大臣？） と彼の保証人（左大臣）と一緒に東の方へ向かって据えられた。・・・・・・？

the Initiateto-be・・・ここは英語的にはどうやって日本語に訳すのでしょうか？

昔の宮中儀式を知る手掛かりにもなりますね。

今晩は。今年の紅葉は、紅い色がさえませんでしたが、それでも秋の空気と月を楽しめました。おかげで風邪を引いてしまいました。

＞the time for his Initiation was come.の正しい直訳がわかりません。（the time was come for his Initiationと並び変えて訳したのですが）

●とても分かりやすい訳です。すんなり読めました。the time for his Initiation was come. のところですが、for his Initiation　は、the time を修飾しています。前置詞句は、形容詞にもなれば副詞にもなるので、常にどちらで使われているのか気にしなければなりません。「元服の時がやってきた」です。

＞was comeと受動態になっているのはなぜですか？（受動態を考えるとhis Initiationを主語にして訳した方がいいのか。。。。？？）

● come と go に関しては、完了形を be動詞 + come (p.p.) / gone で作ることがあります。
　Spring has come. = Spring is come. です。

　He supervised in person 【目的語１：the ordering of the banquets that were to be given in various quarters】, and【目的語２：the work of the Treasure and Grain Intendant】という構造です。「帝は自ら、さまざまな部屋にもっていかれるべきご馳走の注文と、内蔵寮と穀倉院の仕事とを監督した」です。

＞the Treasure and Grain Intendant（内蔵寮と穀倉院）・・・ここは英訳がよくわからなかったので現代訳を参考にしました。

●原文では、the ordering of the banquets that were to be given in various quarters＝the work of the Treasure and Grain Intendant　となっています。饗膳の手配が内蔵寮と穀倉院の管轄だったのでしょうが、まかせておけぬとばかり、帝が指揮をとったということです。

＞fearing・・・恐れないこと？

●分詞構文です。主語は帝です。「帝は役人は粗略なことをやりかねないと恐れて（自ら陣頭指揮にあたった）」です。

＞the officials should be remiss・・・・・・可能性のshouldですか？

● lest ～ should という構文です。「～するといけないので」と訳します。

　the seats of the Initiatet-to-be and his Sponsor (the Minister of the Left) 【were】in front. です。「冠を受ける源氏の席と冠を被せるもの（左大臣）の席が、（帝の席の）正面に置かれた」

＞the Initiateto-be・・・ここは英語的にはどうやって日本語に訳すのでしょうか？

●手元に Waley がないので確かめられませんが、the Initiate-to-be ではないでしょうか。○○-to-be というのが、これから○○になろうとする人　という語尾です。「これから冠を授けられる人」で、源氏のことですね。

＞昔の宮中儀式を知る手掛かりにもなりますね。

●ほんとにそうです。目の前に見る思いがしますね。

2）は倒置が使われていたのですね。詳しく説明してくださってありがとうございます。
fearing lest the officials should be remissのところの意味も全然違っていました。

the Initiateto-beはthe Initiateが行の一番最後でthe Initiate-となっていたので次の行の先頭のtoとつながるのかと思ってしまいましたが、the Initiate-to-be ですね。源氏のことだったのですね。
