全部英語に訳しました。「理科二類」をどう訳せばいいか分からなかったので、science department (科学部)にしました。プロ翻訳家などではなく、普通のイギリス人高校生ですが、お役に立てば幸いです。 I would like to enter the science department of The University of Tokyo to study Biology. In concrete terms, I want to go on to a national research institution after I graduate. I will state below my reasons and motivation for this. During the summer holidays of my second year at high school, I heard some news: the world's population is currently growing at an explosive rate and will suffer from food shortages within the next 30 years. Upon hearing that news I felt a sense of crisis. Food shortages are, naturally, a matter of life and death for humankind. Considering this, I thought about how it would be best to handle this problem and came up with several ways of solving it. One example would be a nationwide strategy similar to China's one-child policy. This would fundamentally solve the problem but I personally cannot take such action. We can also consider ways such as increasing agriculture and reducing the amount of food which is discarded; however it is doubtful whether this would solve the problem completely. That's where Biology comes in. The problem could be solved if we were able to safely produce large amounts of genetically modified foods. There's also the example of the mother who's body mutated and became able to live without eating at all., perhaps due to her sorrow at the loss of her son. In genetics, the possibilities are limitless. By thourghly reseaching this, I believe we will be able to solve various problems. The above is my motivation for applying. This might be a bold thing to say, but I want to conduct research that will save mankind. As the first step towards this goal, I would like to apply to The University of Tokyo.
