First, if you meant "Japanese universities/colleges," you should have written as "日本の大学"(a common noun), because there is a private university named "日本大学 Nihon University" (a proper noun) established in Tokyo. http://www.nihon-u.ac.jp/ Do you know the difference between two types of organization as "部" and "サークル" (from an English word "circle")? The former is authorized and financially aided by the college, and have a supervisor chosen among academic staffs. They are often registered in the inter-college league or association, where the team compete against other colleges' teams in soccer, judo, orchestra etc. When the team win the prize, appearing in nation-wide TV programs, it becomes an effective ads for their university. Furthermore, the winner get some advantage in job seeking. In this case, their practice may take place after school everyday. When the team members cannot attend classes because of an inter-college competition, their absence is officially allowed in many colleges. The circle is established by "those who want to do it as they like." No one knows how many circles exist in the college. Some circles willingly receive members from other colleges, especially from a girl's school. They seek companionship rather than specific skills, and their practice or meeting will be held arbitrarily in the week.
