Web検索で色々と調べて見て最後まで分からなかったのが、地上走行をすることを何故、”taxi”というかです。教えていただきたく。

I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I encountered a courteous human being in this modern era of the so called Gen X.
Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being. I had gone to a happening coffee place, with two of my grown up daughters. The place was crowded with the usual loud crowd and we had to climb a steep flight of stairs in order to find an empty table.
I had goneのところはなぜ単純過去ではダメなのでしょうか？なぜ過去完了なのでしょうか？よろしくお願いします

NHK実践ビジネス英語2007年8月号Lesson 11(2)のvignetteでTakahashiさんは、"fruits and vegetables”と言い、Alvarezさんは”fruit or veggies”と言っています。
辞書を見ると”fruit”は「果物」という意味では集合名詞であり、農作物の収穫、なり物としては複数形とありますが、vegetableには区別がありません。
Takahashiさんは、果物・野菜の商品として可算名詞の複数形を使い、Alvarezさんは種類としての果物・野菜という意味でfruitが集合名詞のためveggiesと複数形にしていると思いますが、fruit or veggieではおかしいのでしょうか？

文頭のwhat timeは副詞的用法でしょうか？またそのような用法として使用されているのでしょうか？
名詞としてWhat timeを使うならWha timw is it?のようなもので、１ならfrome what timeとなるのかと思ったのですが。

NHK実践ビジネス英語2006年8月Lesson 10(2)のAlvarezさんの台詞で、” between seeming to react too little or too much”が、出てきます。比較しているのは、”between too much or too little”で、その前の”a fine line”に結び付いて”between”が続いていると思いますが、何故、”between A and B”とならなかったのですか？
下記のWeb検索では、“between A or B”は正しくないといってる気がするのですが、文法的には正しくないが、実際には使われることがある事例といて挙げられているのでしょうか？
