It is a cool but sunny day in Borrego Springs,Calfornia. As Eleanor Shimeall prepares to cook her meal, she opens the door and steps outside of her home. You see, this woman does not cook inside her kitchen-she cooks outdoors! She walks over to a strange-looking piece of equipment and opens a glass door to put in her bread. She then opens the lower part of another glass and wood construction and says,“I'm going to check on this chicken and rice and see how it'scooking.” As she takes off the top of the pot, she can see that the dish is cooking nicely. “Ah, it's doing a good job,”she says. Shimeall's meal looks delicious; however, there is one remarkable thing about her cooking method. Unlike most people, she is not using electricity, gas, charcoal, or wood to cook her food. Insted, Shimeall is using the sun to make her meal, and she has done it almost every day for more than 20 years. She cooks with solar power!

1 The books I shall mention in due course will help you neither to get a degree nor to earn your living. They will not teach you to sail a boat or drive a car, but they will help you to live more fully. That, however, they cannot do unless you enjoy reading them. 2 Father did not know the real reason why George was always up so early. I am sure that if he had, he would not have praised him so much. 3 While I was spending a year in Germany, I learned many things. One of them is that, in Germany, you must never throw things out of a window even if a cat keeps you awake all night with its mewing.

Mass media made avaliable kinds of popular music heard previously only in limited geographical areas or by specific ethnic and social groups.

Even the changes in the environment ,in answer to which adaptation may be thought to have occurred ,can to large extent be read in the geological and paleontological record left in the sediments of ages past.

Do you say what the door on 1st floor is opened? Is there any things~~と切り出せばいいのでしょうか。 Maybe,I think no one went into the room.

The only problem with common sense is that it is based on our preconceived notions in most cases rather than on evidence. For example, common sense suggests that better lighting reduces crime. If I were going to commit a crime I would look for a dark spot. But as it turns out, I am not a criminal. And in the case of lighting there is some evidence that common sense is not completely right. A recent headline contained these words: Street lighting is said to affect crime-little. The article contained this report : "A government-funded study has concluded that although well-light streets may lessen the fear of crime, there is no statistically significant evidence that the lighting actually reduced crime. The study says that crime increased in certain well-illuminated area because the thieves could see what they were doing better. Another finding was that the lighting displaces crime. In addition to increasing in the newly lighted areas, in neighboring places where the lighting has not yet been installed crime goes up." Perhaps you have visited a friend recenty in a hospital. If you are old enough to remember visiting people in a hospital 30 or more years ago, perhaps you will recall that in the surgical wards there were few patients walking. Common sense used to dictate that movement right after surgery was harmful. Whether by design or accident, patients are now almost forced out of bed the first day after surgery in most cases. Healing takes place more quickly with immediate movement. Common sense reasons were replaced with reasons based on evidence in this particular case. Until we evaluate the effects of our common sense notions in the same way increased lighting and movement after surgery have been evaluated, we can hardly hope to learn if what we do is worthwhile, let alone improve what we do.

These include the Little Ice Age (LIA) between the 14th and the 19th centuries and the so called Medieval Warm Period (MWP) around the 9th to the 12th century. The history of solar activity, on the other hand, has been investigated through cosmogenic radionuclides, such as carbon-14 and beryllium-10, embedded in the tree-rings and ice cores for decadal (Beer et al., 1998) and centennial changes (Stuiver and Quay, 1980, Stuiver and Braziunas, 1989 and Usoskin et al., 2004). The reconstructed records show that the sun has gone through several prolonged activity minima as well as maxima roughly in sync with the cold and warm spells such as the LIA and the MWP (Eddy, 1976 and Stuiver and Braziunas, 1989), although it is still difficult to evaluate solar variations quantitatively. The patterns of climate and solar variations are similar, but the global warming trend has not leveled off during the last few decades when the activity of the sun has peaked (Lockwood and Fröhlich, 2007), pointing that the anthropogenic greenhouse gasses are the major factor responsible for the global warming.

Buy Cover Girl makeup. (You will be beautiful.) Wear Nike sneakers. (You will be strong.) Drive a Lexus. (You will be successful.) Drink Budweiser. (You will be popular.) Advertising's promises can seem harmless, but a group of critics, scholars, and journalists argue that they aren't. They have formed a group called the Media and Democracy Congress. This group wants to teach Americans how influential advertising can be. In order to do this, they give advertisers awards for had ads. The name of these awards, the Schmios, rhymes with the Clios-the Cscars of the advertising industry. Every advertising agency would like to win a Clio. No one wants a Schmio. Schmios are given for false advertising and for some ads that are just in had taste. For example, TV star Jenny McCarthy won a Schmio a few years ago for an ad that pictures her sitting on the toilet and reading the Wall Street journal. The National Rifle Association also won an award for its Eddie Eagle ads. Eddie is cute and cuddly and loves to teach kids about guns. He tells children, "If you see a gun, STOP! Doit touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult." But critics think the NRA is sending another message. "We gave Eddie Eagle a special award for the most effective contribution to our culture of violence," said Bianca jagger, a Schmio presenter. Shoe company Nike was given a "Lifetime Achievement" award. Charles Kernaghan, executive director of the National Labor Committee, presented the award to the company that spends about $640 million a year on advertising around the World. He pointed out that many of Nike's ads show the empowerment of Women. However, critics argue that Nike doesn't empower its workers-particularly women. In fact, it treats them very badly. Their salaries are low and their working conditions are terrible. Peter Zapf, an advertising expert and a member of the Clio board, defends the Clios. "We honor advertising excellent," but not even he can completely defend his industry. "Most advertising is bad," admits Zapf. "Very few advertising companies respect the customers' intelligence"

Environmentalists like Namakin are focused on fight over flight, drawing up adaptation plans and continuing to urge countries like the United States and Australia to take the lead in cutting emissions. Such action "would give us more hope for the future, instead of starting to pack and leave," he said. The Pacific Regional Environment Program has joined other groups in the region to start a $34 million adaptation effort that includes preparing roads for flooding in the Federated States of Micronesia; improving sea walls and drainage systems in the Cook Islands; and relocating gardens, planting salt-resistant crops and reviving the fishing industry in Solomon Islands atolls. But even Takesy, the program's director, says such efforts may be akin to "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic" unless strong measures are taken by developing countries to curb emissions. "I do not believe that the world should sit idly by while entire countries are slowly but surely annihilated," Takesy said. "And do you really want five million angry Pacific Islanders to come knocking on your door?"

"There's going to be an increased demand for migration, as people look for economic opportunities," said Benjamin Preston, an Australian government scientist in marine and atmospheric research. "And as the impact of climate change becomes more severe, that's going to add urgency into the equation." If there is a mass exodus, countries like Tuvalu - which have contingency plans and close relations with a developed country partner like New Zealand - will have an advantage. The Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia, for example, could benefit from closer historical ties with the United States (both are former U.S.-administered trust territories). The biggest losers will be unskilled, poor islanders who cannot easily emigrate - especially in politically turbulent states like the Solomon Islands. Preston and others say that, aside from New Zealand, there are few signs that developed nations are taking an active approach to dealing with rising emigration from the region. That may be in part because the predicated climate change scenarios still seem too alarmist and far away to accept. Even in Tuvalu, many islanders do not see inundation as an urgent problem, said Lono Leneuoti, a Tuvaluan tourism official. "You don't really notice that much of a difference, except during the king tide months," he said. "It's hard to believe that 50 years from now the place is going to be under water."

Many years later and thousands of miles away - in 1990 in California - he received a standing ovation from 7,000 people after this speech. What did Victor Frankl do that most people with problems don't do? He vividly imagined a future in which his problems were resolved and then worked backward to the present to determine what he would need to do in order to make that future a reality. If you are stuck with a problem, just turning your gaze from the past to a future in which the problem is no longer with you is a major change in the way of viewing the problem. Then, of course, you would have to work backward to the present to figure out what you could do to make that future a reality, rather than just an appealing fantasy.

There he was on the ground,in no condition to go on, and all of a sudden he was no longer in Poland.instead,he found himself imaging himself standing on a stage on postwar Vienna giving a lecture on The Psychology of Death Camps. Audience of two hundred listened to his every word. The lecture was one that he had been working out the whole time he had been in the death camp. He spoke about how some people seem to survive the experience better than others, psychologically and emotionally. It was a brilliant lecture, all taking place in his mind's eye and ear. He was no longer half dead on the field but living in the lecture. During the lecture, Frankl told the imaginary audience about the day he was in that field being beaten and was certain he didn't have the strength to get up and keep walking. Then, wonder of wonders, he told his imagined audience, he was able to stand up. The guard stopped beating him and get began to walk slowly. As he was imagining describing this to his audience, his body got up and began to walk. He continued to imagine this lecture all the while he was doing the work and through the cold march back to the death comp. He collapsed into his narrow bed, imagining ending this brilliantly clear speech and receiving a standing ovation.

On the basis of these macro-indicators of international production and firm-level evidence, UNCTAD estimates that about 80 per cent of global trade (in terms of gross exports) is linked to the international production networks of TNCs, either as intra-firm trade, through NEMs (which include, among others, contract manufacturing, licensing, and franchising), or through arm’s-length transactions involving at least one TNC (figure IV.14 and box IV.3). The total TNC network of the 52 foreign affiliates in Thailand comprises some 6,000 co-affiliates located in 61 countries around the world (the sum of affiliates of all 35 business groups). About 27 per cent of the foreign value added used by individual affiliates in Thailand (of the 75 per cent of foreign value added in exports) is sourced intra-firm from within their own TNC networks or business groups. On the downstream side, an estimated 65 per cent of foreign affiliate exports is absorbed by firms within their own network. Downstream linkages are more concentrated, with potential intra-firm export connections limited to some 850 co-affiliates.
