Without a common American identity, the United States has become little more than a conglomeration of separate and different social group. As each group becomes more and more self-sufficient, more ties are broken with the rest of society, resulting in self-segregation. As fewer threads remain to hold together our increasingly fragile society, the less we look like a patchwork quilt and the more we begin to look like a mosaic, held together only by our proximity to one another.
