前置詞 of の以下の用法について教えてください

質問

次のpassageは高校英語検定教科書 Crown English Reading (New Edition)の第１１課 ’Plenty of Room at the Bottom’ の本文冒頭の２つのparagraphです。
On December 29, 1959, Richard P. Feynman, a Nobel Prize winner in physics, made an epoch-making speech, the title of which was “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom.” In his speech, Feynman speculated on the possibility of exploring the world that exists “down at the bottom,” i.e., the world of atoms and molecules. He cautioned that he was not talking about miniaturization of, say, electric motors that are the size of the nail on your little finger, but rather a “staggeringly small world that is below.” He further predicted that in the future we would be able to make machines as small as molecules.
Feynman’s ideas seemed strange at the time he made his speech in 1959, but today he is thought to be the father of nanotechnology, which is on the cutting edge of modern science. What is nanotechnology? What impact will it have on our lives?

私の疑問は第１段落の第３文：

の…miniaturization of, say, electric motors…のofの用法についてです。
このofの用法は辞書に取り上げられるofの用法・分類ではどれにあたるのでしょうか？

私は件の文全体の意味を
「彼は、（　　　）をしているのではない、と注意を促した。」
としたとき、( )内を以下のように考えました。
(1-a) 例えば、小指のつめの大きさの電気モーターのようなものの極小化の話
(1-b) 例えば、小指のつめの大きさの電気モーターのようなものを極小化する話

つまり、ofは目的格のofと考えたわけです。

ところが、このFeynmanの講演に関わると思われる文章を読んでみると、どうも上の私の最初の解釈は誤っているように思いました。該当箇所に近い部分を引用します。
What I want to talk about is the problem of manipulating and controlling things on a small scale.
As soon as I mention this, people tell me about miniaturization, and how far it has progressed today. They tell me about electric motors that are the size of the nail on your small finger. And there is a device on the market, they tell me, by which you can write the Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin. But that's nothing; that's the most primitive, halting step in the direction I intend to discuss. It is a staggeringly small world that is below. In the year 2000, when they look back at this age, they will wonder why it was not until the year 1960 that anybody began seriously to move in this direction.

この部分を読んで私は、件の箇所を次のように解釈をしました。
(2-a) 例えば、小指のつめの大きさの電気モーターのように物を極小化することの話
(2-b) 例えば、小指のつめの大きさの電気モーターといった物の極小化の話 　

ただ、仮にこの(2)の解釈が大方間違っていないにしても、私にはこのofの用法がよくわからないのです。

いわゆる同格のofなのでしょうか？　いくつか英和辞書を引きましたが、同格ofの用例は以下のように全て前の名詞に定冠詞theが付いていました。
the town of Shibuya （渋谷の町）
a man by the name of Bill （ビルという名の男）
the problem of population [not getting enough sleep] （人口[十分睡眠が取れないという]問題）

同格のofという解釈にも無理があるのでしょうか？　結局よくわかりません。

最初に引用した件のofの用法についてご教示ください。よろしくお願いいたします。

おそらくこの英文の書き手は、お尋ねの「of」を「目的を表す用法」として用いようとしているのだと思われます。しかし、英文として少々不自然なものになっているために読み手（または聞き手）に違和感を与えるものになっているように思います。

　少々長い説明になりますが、我慢してお読み下さい。

　後半の英文からすると「electric motors that are the size of the nail on your littl e finger」は「小型化された結果として出来上がった完成品」のようです。

　そうであれば、「miniaturization」と「electric motors that are the size of the nail on your little finger」の関係は微妙です。「（すでに）小指の爪の大きさの電動モーター」を「（あらためて）小型化する」必要はないからです。

　これは「miniaturize」の意味が「～を小型化する」であって「小型化して～にする」ではないことを考えれば明白なことです。前者の日本語は「小型化する前のもの」が目的語ですが、後者の日本語は「小型化された後の完成品」が目的語になります。しかし、英語の「miniaturize」には前者の意味しかないからです。

　この英文は講演か何かで話した英文を紹介しているもののようです。書き手（話し手）は、最初「miniaturization of ...」まで述べた後、適当な例を頭の中で探している内に「（小型化する前のものである）electric motors」だけで良いのに「that are the size ...」をつい加えてしまったのではないでしょうか。

　そのために「of」の後に置かれる「目的語」が（本来「miniaturize」の目的語としては不適当だと思われる）「小型化した後の完成品」という意味の語句になってしまったのではないかと思われます。

　文法的に正しい英文（または英文として自然なもの）にするならば、「miniaturization」を「production」とすれば良いでしょう。そうすれば「of」が目的を表すことが明確になります。「小指の爪の大きさの電動モーターを製造すること」という意味はきわめて自然なものです。

　または、もとの英文を「miniaturization of electric motors, which would be/have become the size of the nail on your little finger」とすれば「miniaturization」と「electric motors」の関係が明確になります。「電動モーターが小型化された結果、小指の爪の大きさにあること」という意味で理解することができます。

　結論です。「of」は目的語を表すと考えて良いと思います。しかし、目的語が不適切なためにおかしな印象を与える英文になってしまったと思われます。もっとも、そのままの英文でも、言いたいことは理解できますし、文法的（または意味的に）変だという指摘する人はいないでしょう。日本語でもあることですが、おかしな表現でも理解できれば、それで会話（または講演）は問題なく進んでいくものです。

　なお、検定教科書で用いられている英文の中には「？」のつく英文が少なからず含まれています。ネイティブの監修もされているのでしょうが、諸事情のために限界もあるようです。その証拠に改訂版で訂正されることが割りと頻繁に行なわれています。最初からできるだけ自然な英文になるようにしてほしいものです。

　小型化　＝　電動モーター　（あるいは miniaturization = electric motors）

　という等式は成り立ちません。ですから同格の of ではありません、と申し上げれば済んだことでした。

これは　miniaturization of electric motors「電動モーターの小型化」ですから、下記の of の、前置詞の１「の」に当たります。

exaggeration of X　などに見られる。X が of の前の単語に含まれている、他動詞の目的語の用法です。名詞化された動詞 of 目的語、と公式化出来ます。

　ですから同格ではありません。

　要するに今あるものを「縮める」話ではなく、「桁違いに微小な世界」の話、だと言っているだけですから、、、
